Why I’m not queueing up for an iPhone 5
I already have an iPhone.
It is a very cool bit of technology. It has made my life way better, as I can now check my Facebook mentions within seconds of waking up in the morning (before speaking to my wife and kids, making breakfast, doing yoga, reading, etc).
It also represents abusive labour conditions, environmental destruction, and wars fought over raw materials. In a sense, it encapsulates the complete moral degeneracy of our culture: we insist on having all this stuff that defines us, and we do our best to block out the thought of the killing and exploitation that lies behind it. In so doing, we also affirm our own supremacy over the victims of that killing and exploitation.
Right now, hundreds of people are queueing up to buy a new iPhone, perhaps feeling that the £529 worth of exciting new features will make up for the all-pervasive shallowness of the dominant culture.
Personally I’m sticking with my existing morally-degenerate technology stack, thanks very much! Perhaps I’ll go and download some of the vast library of high quality music being given away for free by great musicians that don’t quite have Apple’s marketing push…
